SCOSIT meet up 5th October: What transpired

Andrew's presentation: HTML 5

Andrew's presentation: HTML 5

The MC for the day was Kirui Kennedy. On the agenda were two things; getting started on WordPress and a talk by Andrew Kinai on HTML5.

First on stage was Kirui to do a demo on installation of WordPress. First he went through the reasons as to why WordPress was a preferred platform for him namely

  • It is lightweight
  • It is free
  • Easy to customize
  • There are many developers working on it and so it is easy to get help

He then showed the members on how to install and configure WordPress using Apache server and MYSQL database. WAMP was used for this as opposed to having each of the soft wares installed separately. To learn more about WordPress follow this link.

Andrew Kinai then took the stage. His presentation was titled “HTML 5 for mobile”. HTML 5 is being developed as the next major revision of HTML. It introduces and enhances a wide range of features including form controls, APIs, multimedia, structure, and semantics. It introduces a whole set of new elements that make it much easier to structure pages. Using HTML 5 you can develop rich web sites that look like apps done using j2me/android e.t.c but that run on all makes of phones.

Andrew pointed out that the main challenge for HTML 5 was browser readiness, Chrome 5.0 being 86% ready and Internet Explorer 8.0 being the least with 26%. As a result he encouraged the members to use HTML 5 to develop sites for phones. To know more download Andrew’s presentation here for powerpoint or here for pdf format.

Andrew also encouraged the members to read wide as technology is rapidly changing and participate in competitions such as IPO48.
