A new semester, a new plan

First let me welcome all the members to the new semester. Hope you had a good holiday! With a new semester comes new plans and we would like to have them on the blog before our first meeting. We were to have our first meeting on 13th of September, 2011 but we could not since it coincides with GKenya of which most of our members will be attending. As a result we will have the first meeting on the 20th of September, 2011 so please let your friends know.

First we would like to congratulate the Google Student Ambassadors who will be representing JKUAT. They will be representing all the JKUAT campuses as the student ambassadors. They are;

  • Serah Kiburu and
  • Paul Odero

We are all waiting to participate in the events that you guys will organize!

What do we aim to achieve this semester? SCOSIT has been making progress each semester and it is time we went to the next level.

What we didn’t complete

From last semester we have some things pending namely:

  • SCOSIT web site
  • Member registration
  • SCOSIT elections
  • Java Cell

What we need to do is first clear all the above then we can focus on other things. Another post will be done specifically dedicated to what the election entails. We will give a full description of the available posts and the corresponding duties.

We would like to encourage the members to renew their registration as most if not all the activities will require one to be a member in order to participate. The elections will only be open to registered members.

With regards to the SCOSIT website we already had a team in place to work on it and the onus is on them to deliver the site as soon as possible. If you would like to be part of this team hit us with an email using our official email (scosit.icsit[at]gmail.com].

Edward Ochieng had started a Java group with the aim of helping any of the members interested in Java. The discussions started on the 12th of September. The group is still open to new members. You have to be a member to be part of this so make sure you register by paying a hundred shillings only.

What we have planned

This is just a tentative plan so please feel free to share your thoughts and comments. This plan will be executed mainly by the incoming committee with minimal help from the outgoing committee.

So what do we have in mind? So far we have thought of the following;

  1. SCOSIT Hackathon – we mentioned this last semester but due to time constraints we could not do it. So far we have been able to talk with one company which is willing to be part of this. We are also in the process of coming up with the various categories for the hackathon.
  2. SCOSIT Dinner – this we hope will be the highlight of our academic year. Plans are in place for it and we will let you guys know where you can help out.
  3. Visit by mLAB – mLAB is a mobile incubation laboratory devoted to nurturing ideas to actual businesses. We plan to have them visit our members and share a few things with the SCOSIT community.
  4. Mobile Boot camp by Akirachix – what does it take to develop, deploy and monetize a mobile application? In conjunction with Akirachix SCOSIT will hold a mobile boot camp to answer these questions.
  5. Capacity building – We have seen how the JKUAT Endeavor program has helped many students to improve their skills. We hope to replicate what we did last year; hold a similar training on mobile application development.

Please feel free to leave your comments and suggestions below before our first meeting so that we can incorporate them in our plans. Cheers!
