First Semester meeting recap

The meeting started early with an opening. The chairman, Ken Kirui then welcomed the present members and introduced the day’s agenda.

Semester Plan

There are a number of events that the society is organizing for this semester for the members to gain hands on experience and also to be able to interact with experts in the IT Industry:

The events include:

i) Hackathon

This is an event when programmers meet to do collaborative computer programming. The spirit of a hackathon is to collaboratively build programs and applications.This is scheduled to happen on a saturday. A hackathon refers not simply to one time hacks, but to a specific time when many people come together to hack on what they want to, how they want to – with little to no restrictions on direction or goal of the programming.

ii) Visit by Akirachix

The society is organizing a visit by these TechLadies also on a Saturday to give  a talk on how conceptualize an idea, actualizing it and monetizing.

iii) Scosit Dinner

The society will look for sponsors of the event and the Univeristy Bus will be used to transport members to the selected location such as Safari Park.

iv) Java Cell

Edwin Ochieng Enlightens members on Java Cell

This is a program started by a SCOSIT member Omondi Edward Ochieng. It is meant to equip those who are interested in Java Programming with skills that cater for both advanced and novice programmers. It has already started and to participate one needs to be a registered member of the society. The classes are scheduled from Monday to Thursday from 6.00 pm to 7.30 pm, Hall 7 Room 19.

On Monday we cover java Basics, Tuesday – Topics such as Database Connection, Sockets. On Wednesday J2ME is covered. If anyone is interested, register with the society and participate.

Google Student Ambassadors

Paul Odero Ojwang’ and Serah Njambi, the new JKUAT Google Student Ambassadors then took to the floor to introduce themselves and give the present members an opportunity to ask questions and give suggestions on the events that they would be interested in. They will act as a liaison between Google and the University. You can follow them on twitter @googlestudents and join in the discussion, #googleoncampus.
